Last year a British newspaper documented the sad story of a family dealing with Alzheimer's Disease, the case showcased how this illness can leave you a shell of your former self, Susan William's Father *The name's have been changed to protect the family's privacy* was once a Navy solider with a quick wit and sharp mind but this is not the case today, Steven has lost much of his mental abilities to the horrible illness Alzheimer's Disease. This is basically a 70 year old man who is living in the mind of a child.
The damaging effects of the illness
The illness is most known for the powerful way it takes the memory but Alzheimer's disease does much more than take the memory, according to Susan taking care of her Father is like caring for a small child. The pictures of her Father sits on a dresser in the living room, it is a constant remembrance of when he was strong and young. Steven often has no recollection of the daughter that he once took care of, the illness is much worst than a lost of memory, Steven forgets to go to bathroom and often forgets to take a shower. The most punishing part of the illness is that the person “forgets how to take care of themselves”. Caring for an Alzheimer's patient is tough, when it is a family member it is often extremely challenging because we remember a former person who is not coming back. “The fact that I have to feed my Father and he does not know who I am is still something I cannot get use to” Susan stated.
Alzheimer's disease is growing worldwide, in the United States the illness is expected to double in a very short time, everyone is at risk. Medications have been very little help, there are no medical cures expected for the next 20 years and this is with hopeful thinking. Story's like Steven's are becoming increasingly disturbing as the Alzheimer's disease numbers grow, according to the Center of Disease control Approximately 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's, and the Alzheimer's Association expects that number to triple over the next 40 years. With little help from the big pharmaceutical companies many have turned to natural cures attack the illness
